ChimneySaver Water Repellant

Chimneys are especially vulnerable to the elements because they project so high above the roofline. There is no protection for them at such a high altitude. Once damage is present on the chimney, if the brick begin to crack or spall, it is only a matter of time before you will be facing some pretty pricey chimney overhauls. Preventative maintenance is the key to keeping your chimney looking nice and staying safe. Because water is the main cause of most cracks in a chimney and is the cause of the face of the brick popping off, the best way to keep your chimney in working order, preventing costly repairs, is to protect brick regularly with a water repellent.

ChimneySaver Water-Base Water Repellent has been in circulation by professionals for almost 20 years. This unique repellent is vapor permeable so it will not trap water vapors in the brick. Water repellents that trap the vapors in the brick actually cause spalling rather than preventing it. ChimneySaver's Water Base formula is recommended for brick or other masonry surfaces which have not been previously treated with another sealer. Chimneys or other masonry projects that have been previously treated with a water repellent require using the Solvent-Base Water Repellent, formulated with mineral spirits.

You must always be aware that there is a small percentage of moisture present in all brick or concrete structures, and the silicone in film forming sealers trap the vapors inside, catalyzing the rate at which brick or concrete deteriorates. This is the opposite effect of what a protective water repellent should do. Film forming waterproofers are actually going to increase the rate at which your masonry structure deteriorates and will heighten freeze thaw damage due to the water trapped inside the brick.

In contrast to these film-formers is the ChimneySaver Water Repellent products. Both the Water-Base and the Solvent-Base make it possible for vapors to escape, preventing the deterioration of the masonry surface. Per gallon, the ChimneySaver Water-Base Water Repellent covers between 90 and 150 sq. ft. depending on the thickness of each coat, and it is available in 3, 5, 30, and 55 gallon containers. It is important that temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, or else it will not cure properly. The product dries in about two hours, but you must allow six hours of drying time before rainfall. Very cold temperatures will reduce the efficiency of the product. It is recommended to apply using a pump-sprayer, and soap and water is appropriate for clean up.
